From escarpment soils planted in 1988 on south facing slopes rare in Niagara, this is from the warm 2016 vintage. It was aged 10 months in French and American oak. The nose is generous with spicy, tobacco-like note mindful of Spanish Rioja, with underlying blackcurrant, leafy notes more like Bordeaux. It is medium weight, quite firm indeed rigid with considerable tannin heft and some resinous and green character, plus earth and tobacco on the finish. The length is very good to excellent. I have had good experiences with mature cab-merlots from Henry of Pelham, and I suggest ageing this well into this decade. Score - 88. (David Lawrason, winealign.com, June 19, 2020)
